We are pleased to announce that the University has appointed Nicolas Shumway, effective July 1, 2010.
Professor Shumway is the Tomas Rivera Regents Professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin. Before becoming department chair, from 1995 to 2006 he served as Director of the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. Professor Shumway moved to UT Austin in 1993 from a faculty position at Yale University. At Yale he served as chair of the University Committee on Foreign Language Instruction (1986-1993), chair of the program in Latin American studies (1986-1988), and director of undergraduate studies in Spanish. He began his academic career at Indiana University Northwest.
Professor Shumway received his PhD in 20th Century Spanish American Literature from the University of California at Los Angeles. Currently, his scholarly and research focus has been in Latin American history and culture, ideologies of Hispanism, Latin American writers, and Spanish American literature.
